Dear Higher Education Community,
Happy New Year!
On behalf of everyone at the National Student Clearinghouse, I want to thank you for your support and participation during our 25th anniversary celebration in 2018. Last year was a transformational one in the Clearinghouse’s journey, an opportunity to salute our successes together and share our vision of the future with you, including how we plan to evolve our services to meet education’s ever-changing needs.
As we begin 2019, the Clearinghouse is off to a great start with many more ways to serve you:
- A New Mission and Vision for You
- The Next Generation Transcript Experience
- Successful Fall Reporting Season

A New Mission and Vision for You
As our 26th year begins, we have renewed our commitment to serving the K-20 to workforce continuum through our new mission and vision statements that guide everything we do.
MISSION: Serve the education and workforce communities and all learners with access to trusted data, related services, and insights.
VISION: To be a premier resource in serving and supporting the opportunities created by lifelong learning.
Finally, this year, we are introducing our new logo, which you can see at the top of this post, as well as a new tree seal.
The Next Generation Transcript Experience
The Clearinghouse reinvented transcript ordering with the fall release of the “Next Generation Transcript Experience,” which is up to 50% faster than other ordering solutions. In time for the January peak transcript ordering season, 95% of our Transcript Ordering schools are live on the “Next Generation Transcript Experience,” which is enabling greater speed and efficiency nationwide. Ordering and data entry time have been cut in half. In addition, its mobile friendly and intuitive design is driving adoption by students, resulting in as many as 30,000 transcript orders processed in a single day in January. And the year has just begun!
Our Transcript Services site’s new look-and-feel provides easier access to understanding the benefits of our solutions, including the “Next Generation Transcript Experience.” In addition, our new services updates page, available under “News” on our home page, offers the latest updates, enhancements, and features added to your Clearinghouse services.
Successful Fall Reporting Season
I’m pleased to report that we had a successful fall enrollment reporting peak season, our 25th serving you! Our standard file processing turnaround time remains well under five days, even with the abrupt change to NSLDS Enrollment Roster/SSCR reporting logic introduced by the Federal Student Aid (FSA) during the summer.
The change resulted in a sudden increase in Error Code 75s (EC75s). In response, the Clearinghouse deployed a solution that automatically addresses and eliminates many of the EC75s. We’ve also been actively working with our contacts at FSA and NSLDS on a resolution to other error-related issues within their system. This is part of our ongoing commitment to reducing your compliance-related work burdens. On your behalf, the Clearinghouse prevents and eliminates more than 7.8 million compliance-related errors and data discrepancies each year.
More Ways for You to Put Data to Work
In the face of unprecedented changes to education, more than ever, the Clearinghouse is focused on establishing data connections between the education, workforce, and learner communities. This includes our work with industry credentials as well as innovative solutions, like StudentTracker Premium Service that transforms your understanding of student pathways while improving efficiency.
Overseeing our data strategies is our new Chief Data Officer, Roberta Hyland. A long-time Clearinghouse employee with a vast knowledge of the technologies and platforms that support our data-driven activities, Roberta is uniquely qualified for this critical role. In this position, Roberta will focus on honing the Clearinghouse’s internal and external data strategies to enable scalability and effectiveness; expanding our work with industry credentials, not-for-credit enrollments and other credential providers; and connecting learner experiences to labor outcomes.
One of Roberta’s responsibilities is ensuring the Clearinghouse’s privacy and security policies remain a top priority. We realize that data security is also a priority for our schools. If you missed it, I encourage you to read our white paper, “Cybersecurity: Why It Matters to Registrars, Enrollment Managers and Higher Education,” released in collaboration with EDUCAUSE and the Research and Education Networking Information Sharing and Analysis Center (REN-ISAC).
Finally, our renowned National Student Clearinghouse® Research Center™ continues to provide insightful reports throughout the year that draw on our unrivaled student-level information resources. In our recently released seventh annual completion report, for example, our researchers found that the national six-year completion rate reached its highest level, 58.3 percent, since we began tracking completion in 2012. To subscribe to receive our research reports as they’re released, visit our Research Center.
Full Calendar of Live Events
The Clearinghouse has a full schedule of events — nearly 300 — to share with you in 2019! We have big plans for the upcoming American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) annual meeting on March 31-April 3 in Los Angeles and Ellucian Live on April 7-10 in New Orleans. We’re introducing a new look-and-feel to our booths at both shows and have a host of wonderful sessions and activities to share with you. This includes an up-close look at our recently released “Next Generation Transcript Experience” and exciting developments regarding our student portal, Myhub. You can also see us at the annual shows for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), as well as at a number of regional shows and user group meetings.
The Clearinghouse will also be on the road with our popular, free “Clearinghouse Academy Live: In Your Neighborhood” sessions. We’ve expanded the content to include panel sessions comprising real StudentTracker users sharing how data can be used to produce more successful graduates. As always, live webinars on our services are held year round (don’t miss our February webinars!). Events are added regularly, so make sure you bookmark our events calendar.
Tell Us How We’re Doing
To help celebrate our 25th anniversary, we hosted a gift card contest on social media that generated over 1,000 likes and 300 comments from our followers. This feedback was tremendously helpful in learning how well our services help the education community, and has encouraged us to continue to ask: How are we doing and how can we improve? I invite you to share your experience with the Clearinghouse by taking our short survey or leaving a review on our Facebook page. Either way, we want to hear from you. And be on the lookout this year for more social media contests with opportunities to win!
Please reach out to your Clearinghouse Regional Director to get started on any of our services for colleges and universities. And don’t forget to visit clearinghouseacademy.org to sign up for our events and access our latest training resources.
We look forward to working together on our continued journey in 2019!
